Transitions
A transition blends one clip into the next on a cut: a dissolve, a slide, a zoom, and on audio a crossfade. Transitions sit between two touching clips on the same track.
Add a transition
- Drag a transition from the Transitions panel onto a cut.
- Or select a clip and press T (or Add Transition in its menu): a dissolve with a constant-power crossfade, half a second long, lands on the cut nearer the playhead (or the other one when that side has nothing to blend with).
A transition is refused with a reason when it can't go there: Transitions go between two touching clips, Audio tracks only take audio transitions, Track is locked.
Resize and align
- Drag either edge of a transition to lengthen or shorten it. The other side mirrors it, so it stays aligned on the cut; hold Alt to change one side only.
- Alignment: Start at Cut, Center at Cut or End at Cut keeps the total length and moves it relative to the cut.
- A side can be at most half its clip.
When a clip has no extra media past its edge, the transition repeats the edge frame and warns Some frames are repeated: a clip has no extra media past its edge. Trim the clip a little to give it room.
Transition settings
Select a transition to see its settings in the Inspector:
| Section | Fields |
|---|---|
| Effect | The video transition, its options, or None (cut). |
| Timing | Duration (s), easing (Linear, Ease, Ease In, Ease Out, Ease In Out), alignment. |
| Audio | Crossfade curve: Constant Power (even loudness, the usual pick), Constant Gain (a straight fade) or Exponential. |
Apply to All Cuts copies this transition to every cut on the track. Delete transition removes it.
FAQ
Why can't I drop a transition between my clips?
They don't touch. Close the gap first, then drop it on the cut.
Can a transition change only the sound?
Yes. Set the Effect to None (cut) and keep the audio Crossfade.
