Video Editor
Media Preview
Media Preview (Premiere's Source Monitor) plays one media item on its own, so you can pick the part you want before it goes on the timeline: mark In and Out, then drag that range (picture and sound, picture only, or sound only) onto the Timeline or Program, or press Insert or Overwrite.
Open media
- Double-click a video or audio item in Media, or a clip on the timeline (it opens at that clip's part of the media). Sound-only media shows its waveform where the picture would be.
- Press F on the timeline: the media under the playhead opens at that frame (Match frame).
- The name at the top opens the list of media you opened, with Close and Close all.
Mark In and Out
| Do | How |
|---|---|
| Mark In / Mark Out | I / O, or the { } buttons. |
| Go to In / Out | Shift I / Shift O. |
| Clear | Alt I, Alt O, or Ctrl/⌘ Shift X for both. |
| Adjust | Drag the In or Out flag on the ruler; drag the grip between them to move both. |
The duration on the right is Out minus In. Marks last while the editor is open; Make subclip keeps a range as a preset.
Place the range
| Gesture | What lands |
|---|---|
| Drag the picture | Video and its sound. |
| Drag the film icon | The video only, silent. |
| Drag the wave icon | The sound only, as an audio clip. |
| Drop on the Timeline | Where you drop it, the way your drops; hold Ctrl/⌘ to insert, pushing the rest of the edit later. |
| Drop on Program | At the playhead. |
| Insert (,) / Overwrite (.) | At the Timeline's playhead, on the targeted track. |
With no In it starts at the beginning; with no Out it runs to the end. On a phone, pick Video + audio, Video or Audio, then press Insert or Overwrite.
Playback
Space plays, J / K / L shuttle (press again to go faster), ← / → step a frame, Shift ← / Shift → five. Drag the bar under the ruler to zoom it; click the timecode to type a time.
FAQ
Do my In and Out marks stay?
For as long as the editor is open. To keep a range, use Make subclip (it's saved as a preset in Media).
Can I preview an image?
Images show as a still; they have no In or Out.
